Melt spinning fibres research from SFM

Melt spinning

Thermoplastic polymer chips are melted and fed to a spinnerette by use of a rotating extruder screw.

The action of pumping the molten polymer through small holes in the spinnerette results in threads of polymer which are then solidified by a stream of cool air.

Speciality Fibres and Materials Ltd has particular expertise in the production of highly filled yarns, where the fibre acts as a carrier for a solid non-fibrous material.

An example of this type of product is Micropake, an x-ray detectable yarn made from polypropylene filled with barium sulphate.
